Whistlebox Press Announces a New Dystopian Anthology!

Whistlebox Press is proud to announce that three original novellas by local authors have entered the editing stage in preparation for release in a single volume in October.

“Silo Six” by Wendy Sura Thomson, “Pollen” by Andrew Charles Lark, and “The Bright and Darkened Lands of the Earth” by Donald Levin, have all been submitted to Bailey Kay Lockwood of justduckyediting and will be collected into a yet-to-be-titled anthology of dystopian literature.

A little background: a few months ago, the three of us got together in a Royal Oak coffee house and agreed to take a break from our current writing projects and veer off into the strange and extraordinary world of dystopian literature. By the beginning of August each of us had a well-crafted and completed manuscript in the twenty to twenty-five thousand word range. These stories brilliantly embrace the precepts of the dystopian, and each offer a dark and highly imaginative take on the end of humanity – one through nature taking its cruel course, one being extraterrestrial in origin, and the last resulting from a man-made calamity.

“Silo Six,” by Wendy Sura Thomson is a suspenseful story of survival set far into the future when the sun begins its transformation into a red giant and has scorched the earth into a virtually uninhabitable cinder – an utterly moving odyssey on how love triumphs over a bleak inevitability.

“Pollen,” by Andrew Charles Lark is a multiple point-of-view account of a strange, atmospheric phenomenon that destroys humankind’s ability to reproduce, thus ushering in the extinction of our species – a fascinating vision on how life may have found a way in spite of a global holocaust brought on by the inexplicable.

“The Bright and Darkened Lands of the Earth,” by Donald Levin is a gripping tale set in a desperate, post-apocalyptic future where a heroic woman battles ecological and social collapse in an effort to save her tribe–and humanity–from certain extinction.

We’re very much looking forward to October when we can finally share these dark tales of the future with our treasured readers – and keep your eyes open for more exciting news regarding what promises to be a very exciting book launch.

I Wrote a Children’s Book!

This is Aaron and he’s five years old. We find him in his bedroom on the night before his first day of kindergarten, but… HE CAN’T SLEEP! See, Aaron has a vivid imagination and he’s convinced himself that it’s not kindergarten he’ll be starting tomorrow – instead it’s MONSTERGARTEN! The classrooms in his school won’t have teachers in them – instead there will be monsters giving the lessons! But how will Aaron learn to paint when art is taught by a multi-tentacled OCTOMONSTER!?! He’ll never learn about proper pitch in music class when it’s THE BLOB holding the baton! And gym class!?! Forget about it! How will he learn about sports and fitness when the teacher is, in actuality, THE WOLF-MAN! And watch out for those basketballs… THEY BITE!

But hold-on! Don’t worry! Aaron has an older sister named Emily and she has everything under control. See, she’s starting the 2nd grade, (which is only just down the hall from Aaron’s kindergarten classroom). Emily knows the ropes and before class starts, she’ll take him on a little tour, and show him that there’s absolutely nothing to be scared of.

In case you haven’t already guessed, the title of my children’s book is “MONSTERGARTEN.” It tackles those first day of kindergarten jitters almost every 5 year old boy and girl experiences the night prior to the big day. Now don’t worry… the book isn’t scary (it’s actually a lot of fun), and your pre-K through 2nd grader will love the colorful and imaginative illustrations by Danny Raymond, a graduate of The College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan. She’s been sending me on average one completed illustration per week and I’m elated with her work and I know that you will be too!

Look for “MONSTERGARTEN” to be released around September 1st, 2019.

Excellent Independent Michigan Authors

Over the past couple of years I’ve befriended some amazingly talented Metro-Detroit area authors, and I’d like to introduce you to just a smattering. Please know that this is by no means a comprehensive list, but rather a first edition post. I will include other great Michigan authors in future posts. That said, summer is just around the corner, and lets face it, you’re going to need your next great beach read, so I encourage you to purchase a few books by the fabulous talents I’ve listed below. Please consider the following:

DONALD LEVIN: Author of the brilliantly written Martin Preuss series of detective novels. Martin Preuss is a detective on the Ferndale Police Department whose had his share of tragedy, pain, and heartbreak, but that does not stop him in his dogged pursuit of justice. One unique and touching aspect of these novels is a reoccurring character named Toby – Martin’s severely handicapped son. Martin finds peace, love, and solace in caring for this young man. If you’re a fan of Elmore Leonard, Sue Grafton, or some of the classics like Mickey Spillane and Dashiell Hammett, then you’ll love Donald Levin’s books.

Andy Lockwood: I met Andy at local fair a few years ago where he and a couple other authors were sharing a booth. At the time I was in the process of editing my first book and I was totally inspired by his story as a film maker and author. Andy is prolific, and I really admire his entire body of work which encompasses both the horror and fantasy genres.

Wendy Sura Thomson: As of May, 2019, Wendy has written two books – her first, “Summon the Tiger” is a brilliantly written memoir in which she candidly shares the inspiring story of her life, and this is no run-of-the-mill life either! How many of us have personal accounts of navigating the huge family freighter from Detroit, through the St. Lawrence Seaway, down the Atlantic coast and on toward Florida through massive storms and a bevy of eccentric stops and characters along the way? Wendy’s second book is a deftly written work of fiction titled, “The Third Order” and if you enjoy Dan Brown’s Robert Langdon series, then you’ll love “The Third Order” and Wendy’s powerful protagonist, Maggie Fraser.

Diana Kathryn Wolfe-Plopa: More than any other local author, Diana is the absolute champion of promoting Metro-Detroit independent authors, and I’ve yet to meet anyone who knows more about independent publishing than her. Diana’s enthusiasm for Detroit area independent authors is unparalleled. She’s organized local author events and gets word out to our community about other upcoming events as well. Although her book store, The Scriptorium has closed, this has not slowed down nor stopped her promotional efforts! She now produces a local television show titled Indie Reads on which she interviews local authors on their work and process. In addition to everything else, Diana is an excellent author too, and her goal, as she says (and I’m paraphrasing here) is to write a book in each of the 32(?) recognized genres of fiction. “Free Will” and “A Tryst of Fate” are among my favorites.

Through Facets Shine Phantoms and Chimeras

I stumbled over the rotting trunks of fallen elms and felt my way through the murk of a thick fog that shrouded Seminole Street in steamy pestilence. The roof lines of crumbled mansions materialized through the gloom and behind these the cracked skyline of a ruined city smoldered in the glowing haze of spent flame. The whispers that guided me silenced as the fog parted to reveal 418 Seminole, the decaying house of my ancestors.

I made my way around to the back of the house and pushed my way in through the shattered French doors of the sunroom. Broken glass and loose tile snapped and popped under foot. I stopped concerned about the racket I made. Through the dim I could just make out the arched entryway of the seldom used parlor.

“Come,” beckoned a voice, more sensed than heard. Black tendrils crept out from the parlor and blindly probed inward. They felt along the walls and floor, sensing my heat, drawing closer. I held out my arm and allowed the closest tendril to entwine through my fingers and around my wrist and the others reacted immediately, snapping toward me. They coiled around my arms, legs, and torso, and pulled me into the parlor. The tendrils released their hold and undulated back into the darker spaces.

Some trick of light was at play that made the modest sized room seem vast and cavernous. My eyes adjusted in aperture and what appeared before me now were row upon row of ornately carved, glass sarcophagi framed in bronze and decorated with grotesques, scrolls, and cherubs, and each sarcophagus contained the corpse of a long dead relative protected under green-tinted glass. Further off in a corner of the room, a giant, marble angel knelt weeping, its wings folded in sorrowful repose over a smaller tomb.

I crept down an aisle and stopped at the first sarcophagus and peered through the glass. The body of a woman, dead for eons, lay on a delicate bed of lace. Her head rested on a small pillow and her crinoline era dress—its bows, finery, and bustles, weighed down and flattened by the centuries—shrouded her like the yellowed wings of a dusty moth. Her face was frozen in bitterness and the white of her skin contrasted with the black of her pinched lips. Through granite hallways whispers not her ghost, I thought, remembering a line from some sonnet. Her slippered foot twitched and her head jerked toward me. Her eyes darted under their lids and opened.

“He’s not at rest. I hear his cries,” whispered her faint voice through the muffle of glass.

I stumbled backward and screamed, “Elliot! Where are you?” I covered my ears and shut my eyes to concentrate for the millionth time for any clue the remembered images might offer of the night Elliot disappeared, but only the rote memorization of nothing echoed back.

I shouted at this assembly of dead, “Where is he?” The whispers of my ancestors grew louder, morphing into screams. Clouds of dust rose-up under the glass of each sarcophagus as every corpse spasmed in epileptic hysteria. Drawn toward the silence of the angel, I walked toward it hoping for solace. The tendrils that pulled me into this place lay coiled like snakes around the base of each tomb, and they conjoined with others like the branches of a tree, growing thicker and fatter the deeper I ventured.

I walked, trance-like toward the angel attempting to shut-out the mad persistence of whispers. The angel’s gaze was set on the shattered glass of this smallest of tombs. Spidery cracks radiated outward from two, familiar shaped holes in the glass – holes which two crystals that uncloaked deadly passages would fill perfectly. The sarcophagus was empty and the bronze scroll at its base read, Nora Lintz. Here the tendrils writhed liked decapitated snakes.

Something above rustled. I looked up and Nora’s blank, white, face shone down on me. Her fingers and toes clutched a beam of the coffered ceiling, and she scurried, spider-like, avoiding the tendrils that reached and thrashed at her. I dropped to my knees hoping she wasn’t here to torture and mock me. I looked up at her in despair.

“Where is he, Nora? Where’s Elliot?” I pled.

She looked down on me with eyes that flashed lighting. Her black mouth curled into a smile then she scurried off and disappeared into the dark shadows of the coffered ceiling.

My Little Cold War Story

The Cold War is perceived by at least a few historians as a simpler time compared to today’s confusing and chaotic Gordian knot of post 9-11 global tumult. Similar to a game of chess, the world was divided in half by two superpowers, the United States of America, and the Soviet Union from roughly 1946 until 1991. Each country had (and still has, albeit smaller) an arsenal of thermonuclear weapons locked, loaded, and aimed at each other with a combined size that assures for mutual destruction, but ironically it was this mutually assured destruction that probably kept the leaders of each superpower from initiating their launch codes during politically fraught events like the Cuban Missile Crisis.

In addition to the huge nuclear arsenals, each superpower had their own set of allies situated all over the globe. The US had the Western European countries (many of them members of NATO) and the USSR had the Eastern European countries, known as the Warsaw Pact. Each superpower was led by (mostly) smart historic figures with, at the very least, a modicum of common sense. Sure, there were a few odd anomalies – the mass-murderer Stalin comes to mind, as well as Khrushchev, and Nixon. And it wasn’t a precarious detente the world over. There were a series of mystifying and atrocious blood baths that killed millions of people on the Korean peninsula, Vietnam, Cambodia, much of the Middle East, Africa, and Central and South America from the end of World War II and on.

I have an old and creaky memory of participating in a duck and cover drill that was orchestrated over the PA system by our principal, Mr. Baron at Dresden Elementary School.  It was 1976, our country’s bicentennial year, and by this time these drills were considered archaic relics from the 1950s and 60s. Many of us sixth graders thought that crouching under our desks was silly, which was fostered in part by our teacher, Mr. Miracola who smirked and rolled his eyes through the whole thing. Perhaps there was some global crisis that motivated Mr. Baron to initiate the drill, or maybe it was a directive ordered by the Superintendent of Schools. Who knows? The reasons for the drill are probably lost to the ages, or stashed in some filing cabinet in the basement of Utica Community Schools.

But this memory pales in comparison to something that happened ten years later in 1986 while I was in the Army and stationed in what was then West Germany. Had a diabolic plan not been inadvertently thwarted I would more than likely not be alive today.

I was stationed at a small transportation unit that was located (oddly) in a suburban neighborhood of a small town with a large automobile factory as its primary employer. There was a high school next door, a large sports facility behind the motor pool, and train tracks that ran behind the barracks. To say that our army post stuck out like a sore thumb in this otherwise idyllic setting is an understatement. A small down town (with a couple of bars popular with the GIs) was a short walk away, as was the train station from where the cities of Mainz, Wiesbaden, and Frankfurt could be reached within a half hour. There were perhaps 250 soldiers, give or take, most of whom drove OD-green semi-trucks all over West Germany, all overseen by a dozen or so transportation corps officers. It was a well-run outfit under the command of an extraordinary battalion commander and command sergeant major, both of whom served our country with honor and distinction in combat.

Unlike 90% of the soldiers stationed at our small post, I was not a truck driver. I was in the signal corps and trained as a radio-teletype operator. This was mostly a field occupation, and my primary responsibility was to set up and operate a mobile communications facility, but our unit rarely went on field exercises so I worked in battalion security, known in army parlance as the S-2. My office was a small, vault-like room in the basement of battalion headquarters with a door that could only be opened by dialing a combination lock. This was where the classified documents were kept. I was a clerk, and a classified document custodian. One of my most important duties was to give security briefings to all the new arrivals, both officers and enlisted personnel. I briefed them on issues that pertained to personal security; I reiterated that we were serving in a foreign country and that it was easy to become complacent about personal security, telling them to never be predictable in their daily movements, to take different routes to and from the post. To not talk about their occupations as truck drivers, to never discuss their destinations with anyone, to never reveal the items they were hauling hidden under the tarps of their trailers, and to immediately report any sightings of Soviet Military Liaison Mission vehicles moving in and around their trucks or convoys. Some aspects of my job made me feel like a secret agent – pretty cool for a guy a couple years out of high school! I was known as the security guy, but did I practice what I preached when it came to not being predictable in my daily movements? In a word… no.

One of the reasons that we urged unpredictability was because of a terrorist organization known as the Baader-Meinhof Gang, later known as the Rote Armee Fraction, or RAF. This was a far-left terrorist organization that had affiliations with, and was supported in part by East Germany’s Stasi, or secret police. The RAF was formed in 1970 and was responsible for a large number of sensational terrorist attacks on German CEOs, Bankers, and the US Armed Forces stationed in West Germany. There were wanted posters of RAF terrorists on the bulletin boards of every army and air force base in West Germany, and the black and white photographs on these posters were old, grainy, and of poor quality. Some of the terrorists pictured on these posters actually looked more like raggedy college students coming off a three day drunken bender. But they were dangerous and would not hesitate to kill for their cause. In 1985 in nearby Wiesbaden, a US Army Specialist was lured from a nightclub and driven to the nearby Taunus forest where he was shot in the head. The next day his military ID was used by the RAF to gain entry onto Rhein-Main Air Base where a car bomb was detonated in front of the base commander’s office. Two air force personnel were killed in this explosion.

It was around this time that I requested permission to move off base. I had found a small apartment in nearby Raunheim, and my request was granted because a lot of new soldiers had arrived and we were running out of barracks space. I was happy to finally have some privacy after sharing the barracks with my fellow soldiers for the last three years. It was a ten minute car ride from my apartment to the post and roughly twenty minutes by bicycle. I enjoyed riding my bike to the post because there was hardly any traffic, and I always took the “back way” – a jaunt down a little used road, through a forested area, with an exercise track adjacent to the road. On my way home I’d often see a German neighbor or two, jogging and stopping to exercise along the path. We’d sometimes wave to each other as I passed by on my bike.

In the summer of 1986 a member of the RAF was spotted in the town where I lived at a café by an observant German citizen. She (the RAF terrorist) was sitting outside the café, evidently enjoying an ice cream treat. The police were surreptitiously notified and after a dramatic shoot-out, she was captured and taken to the police department for processing and interrogation. No one, thank goodness, was hurt.

I was flabbergasted. Because I gave security briefings I had become mildly obsessed with the RAF. I carefully scrutinized their photographs whenever new wanted posters became available. I wondered why on earth this terrorist would come here to the town where I was stationed—a veritable Palookaville of West Germany! Was it because of the large automobile factory? Was it because of our small army post? Couldn’t be, I thought. I had a German friend whose father was a detective for the town’s Police Department. I rationalized that, since I worked in security, perhaps he would be willing and able to give me some information regarding the capture of this terrorist. I spoke to him a couple of days after her capture and he told me that he absolutely could not say anything about it—that everything related to it was confidential, that it was an ongoing investigation; that there were people at the department whose job it was to give press releases, but it wasn’t for him to share—no, not a shred of information! I tried pressing him, but he was firm and gave me a big, resounding, “NEIN!” Oh well… at least I tried. Eventually, the RAF terrorist was charged and convicted for, among other things, the murder of the soldier in Wiesbaden a year earlier, and she was sent to prison for a long time. Things calmed down after that, and I incorporated into my security briefings that a member of the RAF had been captured here, in our very town. I told the new arrivals to be diligent, careful, and unpredictable in their patterns because, “…you don’t know who’s observing you in your daily movements.”

Cut to the summer of 2003. My wife and I are on vacation in what is now a reunified Germany. The Cold War had been relegated to the history books and we were now living in our post 9-11 world. We stayed with my German friend (the son of the now retired detective), and his wife. Typical of these wonderfully hospitable people, they had made reservations at a popular restaurant and invited all the other friends I had made while stationed there all those years ago. A few hours later, about twenty people were gathered around that restaurant table!

I don’t remember exactly how we got onto the subject, but I asked the retired detective (whom I was sitting next to) if he remembered the RAF terrorist incident that had happened seventeen years prior.  He looked upward, exhaled, and replied that it was a long time ago. I asked him if he remembered anything about it, or if he knew, for example, why she had come to our town. From what he remembered, it eventually came out that she was on a mission to get a US Military ID Card in order to get onto a US base to detonate a bomb. The RAF had zeroed in on a soldier who often rode a bicycle down a little used road which cut through a forest. Had she not been captured, her team was going to kill the soldier early the next morning and use his ID card to accomplish their mission. I put two and two together, sat there for a few seconds, then blanched.

I did not tell the retired detective that I was the soldier who rode the bike through the forest. Instead, I thanked him for sharing because, after all these years, I sometimes still wondered about it. We moved onto other subjects, and there were other people to talk to and catch up with, so… I filed it away. It took many years before I told anyone what I learned that evening.

My German friendships have held strong to this day, and I’ve since made new and important friendships with people who used to live on the other side of the Iron Curtain through student exchange programs. I know first-hand the good that comes from walls being torn down. Chess should only ever be a board game, and Gordian knots can be untied or cut. I like to imagine a world where our fears and prejudices will one day diminish to nothing, and that we’ll no longer find it necessary to divide ourselves into us versus them scenarios, and no one will think it necessary to build anymore walls.

Perhaps one day we’ll hold our leaders accountable for the divisions they sow. But I worry; now more than ever, that that day may be a long way off….

A New Role I’ve Found Most Gratifying

I was at an author’s event last year in Berkley, Michigan where I had the pleasure of meeting a fellow author who contacted me a couple weeks later and asked if I’d be interested in reading a play that he’d recently finished writing. Apparently he’d read the “About the Author” section of my book and noticed that I’d written a few plays. I guess he wanted what he considered a little professional feedback. I told him I’d be happy to read it. I did so and was pleasantly surprised. I just had no idea at that time what the next year would bring relating to that play.

I thought the play was something that had the potential to become a really good piece of theater. Sure, it needed work. First of all, there were too many characters. Any aspiring playwright should know that theaters today will typically not produce plays with the proverbial “cast of thousands!” My friend’s play’s first draft had (if memory serves) something over 14 characters. Maybe that doesn’t seem like such a big deal, but think about all the costumes a theater will need to dress all those actors. Even if you double cast some of the actors, you’ll still need a lot of costumes. That’s expensive. He also had to notch up the drama, and more firmly establish who his lead character was.

I asked my friend if he’d be interested in having a table reading of his play. He said yes. What’s a table reading? Simple. We print a few copies of the script, gather a cast of actors, give them each a copy, then have them read the play out loud to a small audience of people who know a thing or two about theater. We went ahead with the table reading and it was a success. The actors did an excellent job and my friend got some really valuable feedback from both the actors and the small audience.

Cut to one year later: My friend has made many necessary revisions. He’s cut his cast of characters down to 8, and solidly established who his lead character is. He also notched up the “drama” of the work, putting his lead through some higher ups, and lower downs. This coming August we’re going to have a staged reading in front of an audience consisting of some artistic directors from a few Detroit area theaters, the director of a university theater program, and other artistic luminaries of various disciplines in a beautiful and historic Detroit mansion – a very nice and appropriate setting for this much improved play! My hope is that we will get an even higher caliber of feedback, and (if we’re lucky) perhaps some great leads for submission.

As the author of a novel (and a few plays), I can’t express enough how important it is to get another set of eyes to read your work! Novelists need their beta-readers and editors. Often the proper editing of a book or play can take longer than the actual writing!

So, what’s this new role I find most gratifying? I’m not even sure if there’s a name for it, but for lack of a better term, I’ll refer to it as freelance dramaturgy. I’ve helped my friend take his play from being an un-produce-able play to something that I believe is on the precipice of a professional production. My fingers are crossed and I’ll keep you posted!
